Centre studying quota for Gujjars

The centre is studying legalities and other ramifications of the Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje's proposal that Gujjar's be given reservations under the de-notified tribe category.

This was revealed by Union home minister Shivraj Patil during a high-level consultations he held on defusing the Gujjar's agitation, which claimed several lives.

Patil was briefed by a senior official of the law ministry. National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, Cabinet Secretary K M Chandrashekhar and Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta, sources said. A senior official of the tribal affairs ministry also briefed the meet.

Centre has also sought views of states having sizeable Gujjar population on Gujjar's demand to include them into the scheduled tribes category.

Today's meeting was held in the backdrop of Gujjar agitation taking a violent turn in Rajasthan and affecting areas in neighbouring Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Trains crossing Rajasthan and adjoining states have been cancelled. Over 40 persons have so far been killed in police firing and violence since the agitation began last week.
